Griffon Vultures
Griffon vultures, once nearly extinct in Bulgaria due to poisoning and persecution, are undergoing a significant recovery, primarily in the Arda River Valley of the Eastern Rhodopes, thanks to long-term conservation efforts. Following a 1986 rediscovery of a small colony, a major push began in 1989 to protect and restore the species, leading to a growing population that is now among the largest on the Balkans. Conservation includes anti-poisoning campaigns, creating "Vulture Safe Areas," building artificial nests, and minimising collision risks with electricity lines and wind turbines.
